About Cason Schmit

Cason Schmit, JD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Health Policy & Management at the Texas A&M University School of Public Health.

Schmit is an expert in health law, intellectual property and genomics and biotechnology law. His research interests include law as a social determinant of health, health information technology, health information exchanges, privacy, confidentiality, and security of health information, public health reporting and surveillance, pharmacists’ vaccination authorities, and health in space travel.

Prior to joining Texas A&M University, Schmit worked for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Public Health Law Program as an Oak Ridge Institute for Science Education legal fellow (2013-2015) and as a federal contractor (2015-2016). While with the CDC, Schmit worked with public health professionals within the CDC centers and offices and state, tribal, local, and territorial partners to promote the use of law as a tool to improve the public’s health.

Schmit’s research with the CDC focused on the role of law in health system transformation, including the use of electronic health information to promote public health, state innovation models, pay-for-success initiatives, and pharmacists’ vaccination authority.
