Community Education

A number of educational opportunities are provided for community members throughout the year. We also participate in outreach activities such as health fairs and speaking engagements to help others better understand their health. Two of our most prolific programs include the Coastal Bend Health Education Center and Healthy Texas, which each have a state-wide impact on preventive disease and health care.

Healthy Texas

Healthy South Texas, the pilot program of Healthy Texas, is a novel effort to reduce the highest impact diseases and their consequences throughout a 27-county region in South Texas. Our multidisciplinary team combines the expertise of Texas A&M Health with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service to engage families and promote change in diabetes, asthma and infectious disease. This team promotes preventive health at the most local level of the community, improving the well-being of Texans for generations to come.

Diabetes Education

Our Diabetes Education Program reaches those with diabetes and their families with patient education and other resources. Resources are open to patients and their family members and include:

  • "Controlling Your Diabetes" Classes
  • Family Night Support Groups
  • Hyperlipidemia Consultation
  • Care for Your Kidneys Training
  • Hypertension Training
  • "Healthy Living for Life!" Classes

Coastal Bend Health Education Center

The Texas A&M Coastal Bend Health Education Center (CBHEC), in Corpus Christi, Texas, is committed to improving the quality of health care in the Coastal Bend by advancing the knowledge and skills of health care professionals, students and the community through partnerships in education, research and technology. As a proud partner of Texas A&M Healthy South Texas, our services have expanded beyond the Coastal Bend to improve health outcomes throughout a 27-county area. By engaging families, promoting healthy behavior change and enhancing education, everyone in South Texas will enjoy the benefits of better health now, and for generations to come.

Giving life through medication assistance

Ricardo Cantu lived with hepatitis C for 20 years before a cure was developed. However, the cost for a full course of the medication would cost him $96,000. As a single parent of two teenagers, he knew he needed to do all he could to get the cure, and the Medication Assistance Program through Texas A&M Healthy South Texas came through. Now, Cantu is hepatitis free, is here for his children and living a longer life.
