Interprofessional Social and Ethical Dilemmas in Healthcare (ISEDH)
Think ethically, lead collaboratively
Interprofessional Social and Ethical Dilemmas in Healthcare (ISEDH) is delivered online each spring semester to enhance healthcare students ethical competence in an interprofessional team environment. Students practice team-based decision-making, which is essential for delivering high-quality patient and population care. ISEDH is a core interprofessional learning experience for TAMU Health students in Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health and is either a stand-alone course or content that is integrated into existing courses, depending on student program.
What do students do in ISEDH?
-
Build on their foundation in ethics: Apply ethical principles in a team-based setting.
-
Work as an interprofessional team: Analyze ethical scenarios, share perspectives, and practice effective communication across disciplines.
-
Use teamwork strategies that matter in practice: Apply TeamSTEPPS 3.0 tools and shared leadership to solve problems together.
-
Engage with realistic scenarios: Explore cases involving social determinants of health, vulnerable populations, and complex clinical and community situations.
-
Demonstrate your skills: Complete interactive assignments—discussion boards, quizzes, team discussion meetings, and reflection activities—that help students prepare for practice.
Why does it matter?
Students learn with, from, and about each other—while building the skills they will rely on throughout their careers. ISEDH helps students:
-
Strengthen their professional identity and their interprofessional identity
-
Build confidence working on collaborative teams
-
Recognize and address social and ethical issues that affect patient and population health
-
Prepare for real-world practice, where teamwork and effective communication are essential for the best outcomes
