Student Position Descriptions

All members of the Disaster Day Student Planning Committee (SPC) engage in event planning and attend the event.  SPC positions include Incident Commander, Deputy Incident Commander, Committee Chair, Committee Vice Chair, and Committee Member. Responsibilities for each SPC position are indicated below.

Incident Commander (IC) N=1

  • Maintains good academic standing
  • Reports to faculty advisors and HSC Disaster Day Steering Committee
  • Attends 90% of Student Planning Committee (SPC) meetings
  • Acts as chair of the SPC
  • Serves as the “face” of Disaster Day and is available to act in public relations role during planning stage and on event day
  • Ensures a culture of interprofessionalism and respect among SPC, subcommittees, and other event participants
  • Leads all efforts to plan and implement Disaster Day
  • Works to proactively ameliorate conflict and directly addresses it as it arises
  • Ensures planning deadlines are met at all levels
  • Ensures patient and population health is considered in all planning efforts at all levels
  • Ensures interprofessional perspectives are considered in all planning efforts at all levels
  • Convenes regular meetings with DICs
  • Reviews and disseminates IC/DIC meeting action items
  • Meets with chairs/committees as necessary
  • Contributes to the execution of committee action items
  • Responsible for duties, deadlines, and conduct of those under IC leadership
  • Debriefs after event with potential future IC and DICs

Deputy Incident Commander (DIC) N=4

(one per participating college/organizational area)

  • Maintains good academic standing
  • Reports to IC, faculty advisors, and HSC Disaster Day Steering Committee
  • Attends 90% of SPC meetings
  • Attends 90% of meetings with IC
  • Is assigned to one of four organizational areas:  planning, finance, and administration, external relations, or operations
  • Oversees two area-related committees (e.g. the DIC for Operations oversees the Moulage Committee and the Volunteers Committee)
  • Meets with IC and other DICs regularly
  • Rotates responsibility for IC/DIC meeting scheduling and recording of action items sent to IC for review and dissemination
  • Meets with related committee chairs regularly and/or attends committee meetings
  • Liaises with other DICs regularly to ensure accurate and effective integration of all committee-related tasks
  • Works to proactively ameliorate conflict and directly addresses it as it arises
  • Contributes to the execution of committee action items
  • Considers patient and population health in planning efforts
  • Incorporates interprofessional perspectives into all planning efforts
  • Ensures a culture of interprofessionalism and respect among committees in organizational area and on event day
  • Responsible for duties, deadlines, and conduct of those under DIC leadership

Committee Chair (N=8)

  • Maintains good academic standing
  • Reports to area DIC
  • Attends 90% of SPC meetings
  • Attends all committee meetings
  • Serves as chair for assigned committee
  • Works to proactively ameliorate conflict and directly addresses it as it arises
  • Oversees committee implementation plan
  • Equitably delegates tasks with consideration to committee members’ time and talents
  • Finalizes and disseminates action items from committee meetings and ensures follow through
  • Ensures planning deadlines are met
  • Liaises with other committee chairs as appropriate
  • Considers patient and population health in planning efforts
    Incorporates interprofessional perspectives into all planning efforts
  • Establishes a culture of interprofessionalism and respect among committee participants and on event day
  • Responsible for duties, deadlines, and conduct of those under chair leadership

Committee Vice Chair (N = 8)


  • Maintains good academic standing
  • Reports to committee chair
  • Attends 90% of committee meetings
  • Attends SPC meetings as needed
  • Schedules meetings with consideration of all committee members’ schedules
  • Drafts meeting action items for chair’s review and dissemination
  • Contributes to committee implementation plan
  • Performs tasks as assigned
  • Meets planning deadlines
  • Contributes positively to a culture of interprofessionalism and respect in all committee work and on event day

Committee Members (N=16-24)


  • Maintains good academic standing
  • Reports to committee chair and vice chair
  • Attends 90% of committee meetings
  • Attends SPC meetings as needed
  • Contributes to committee implementation plan
  • Performs tasks as assigned
  • Meets planning deadlines
  • Contributes positively to a culture of interprofessionalism and respect in all committee work and on event day
