January 2019: Kenneth Ramos named Institute of Biosciences and Technology Director

I’m pleased to welcome Kenneth Ramos, MD, PhD, PharmB, a physician-scientist and internationally recognized leader in genomics, precision medicine, environmental health sciences and toxicology, to Texas A&M. Dr. Ramos will lead the Institute of Biosciences and Technology (IBT) in Houston and serve as assistant vice chancellor for health services at The Texas A&M University System, beginning in March.

Dr. Ramos, who was designated as an associate of the National Academy of Sciences in 2008 and elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2015, will join the university through the Governor’s University Research Initiative (GURI). The GURI program was enacted by Governor Greg Abbott in 2015 to attract distinguished researchers who will, in turn, serve as economic catalysts to the Texas economy for years to come.

I want to also thank Peter Davies, MD, PhD, the outgoing director, for his service and loyalty to the IBT. Dr. Davies, who will be returning to the faculty, is a distinguished pharmacologist and molecular endocrinologist. His leadership of the institute for the past few years has helped us grow our Houston presence and attract some of the best and brightest students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty members. I am grateful for his stewardship of the IBT, his commitment to the A&M core values, and personally, for his wisdom and friendship.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Ramos to the Health Science Center and in thanking Dr. Davies for his selfless service.

Thank you,

Carrie L. Byington, MD
