Regents Professor Service Award Nomination Process

Skip breadcrumb navigation

Every year, the Health Science Center (HSC) is eligible to put forward 2 nominations for the Regents Professor Service Award. The HSC Senate is responsible for reducing the total field of candidates from all HSC components to no more than 2 individuals. The following Senate guidelines have been developed for this process.

FEBRUARY SENATE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING:

The Deputy Speaker will instruct the caucus leaders to put into action the nomination process for the Regents Professor Service Award.

FEBRUARY 15:

The caucus leaders will solicit nominations for Regents Professor from their constituents. The process will be started with an email and a hard copy mailing to all faculty members at each component. These mailings will include a call for nominations, announcement of the termination date for nominations (MARCH 15), basic eligibility requirements and a reminder for nominators to get a copy of the Regents Professor Service Award Requirements from the Caucus Leader. The previous year's file can be used if a new one is not yet available. Other mechanisms to encourage participation could include announcements at general faculty meetings or at local faculty governance meetings.

All nominators must ask the person they wish to nominate whether they are willing to be nominated and to comply with assembly of nomination and final packages if nominated. Only those candidates willing to complete all the requirements can be nominated.

Nominees will be asked by the nominator to provide a current curriculum vitae (CV, 25 pages or less in HSC format) and the nominator will provide a summary statement highlighting in 3-4 pages the candidate's major contributions to distinguished service, teaching, and scholarship. It is anticipated that most individuals will need three weeks to complete the packet. Each nominee will be required to submit electronic and hard copies of the CV to the nominator, who will forward the CV and summary statements to the caucus leader. Failure of the nominators, nominees or caucus leaders of any component to comply with the deadlines set out in these guidelines will automatically result in forfeiture of the nominees name to go forward in that year.

MARCH 15 — MARCH 30:

The caucus leader of each component will call a meeting/series of meetings of all Senate representatives from their respective components to select candidates. In addition, other members of the general faculty can be brought into the process, at the discretion of the caucus. At this/these meetings, the Senators will select the names of no more than two candidates from their components (2 from Baylor College of Dentistry, 1 from the College of Medicine Clinical and 1 from the College of Medicine Basic Science, 2 from the Institute of Biosciences and Technology and 2 from the School of Rural Public Health) to be brought to the full Senate for consideration. Candidates will be selected using the Selection Criteria as set out in the Texas A&M University System Regents Professor Service Award Guidelines. Components are not required to put forward a nomination. Only the names of exceptional candidates should be forwarded to the next level. Failure of the component Senators to reduce the number of candidates to two will result in automatic forfeiture of all nominees from that component for consideration in that year.

APRIL 1:

The CVs and summary statements for the candidates selected by the Senators from each component (a maximum of 8) will be forwarded to the Deputy Speaker of the HSC Senate. The Deputy Speaker will be responsible for distributing the packets for each of the finalists to the Senate Executive Committee members. The Deputy Speaker will then call a special meeting/series of meetings of the Senate Executive Committee. At this/these meeting/s a thorough review of each candidate will be done to assure a fair process and to select up to two outstanding candidates from the list of nominees from all components. Candidates will be selected using the Selection Criteria as set out in the Texas A&M University System Regents Professor Service Award Guidelines. The Senate Executive Committee is not required to select any nominees and should put forward only the names of only exceptional candidates, if any.

MAY SENATE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING:

The Deputy Speaker will ask the Speaker to place on the Agenda of the April/May HSC Senate Meeting discussion of the final nominees (if any) for the HSC Regents Professor Service Award.

MAY HSC FACULTY SENATE MEETING:

The Deputy Speaker will present the name/s of no more than two outstanding nominees to the HSC Faculty Senate for general discussion and consideration. On agreement of the HSC Faculty Senators present at the meeting, the name/s will then be forwarded to the President of the Health Science Center. The Deputy Speaker of the HSC Faculty Senate will notify nominees whose names will not be moving forward to the HSC President.

JUNE/JULY:

The nominees (if any) will complete their application packet as described in the "Regents Professor Service Awards Requirements" and forward the information to the HSC President by June 30th.
