Our Aspirations

  • Texas A&M Health Science Center (TAMHSC) will be nationally recognized as the most rapidly emerging, research-intensive, innovation-driven, health science center in the nation.

TAMHSC will be known for improving and protecting public health, locally and globally, by insistence on an inter-disciplinary, evidence-based, and outcomes-oriented approach to education, research, translational science, patient care, population health, innovative pharmaceutical development, health advocacy, community outreach, service, and commercialization.

We will maintain our unique characteristics and health professions-oriented culture, but will be recognized as an essential, valued, and inextricable component of Texas A&M University. The merger will have matured such that collaboration is seamless and unencumbered, and students from all colleges within the university benefit from expanded quantity and quality of educational opportunities that incite creativity, collaboration, and service. TAMHSC administration, faculty, staff, and students will become fully integrated into the Texas A&M University family, and will benefit from shared Aggie Traditions, culture and values.

  • TAMHSC will be the primary partner for translating all research advances from the
Texas A&M System into clinical practice.

We will leverage our talent, infrastructure, and geography to rapidly translate these advances to improve the health of Texas, the nation, and the world.

We will further optimize our curriculum to reflect health care practice in the 21st century, including the impact of technology, patient-empowerment, personalized medicine, novel drug delivery systems, and interdisciplinary sciences.

By modeling the College of Dentistry program for development of diversity to other health science center colleges, TAMHSC will be among the national leaders in developing a healthcare workforce that embraces under-represented minorities and innovative programs in multicultural competency that are essential for providing care to our diverse populations.

  • Academic programs within TAMHSC will be recognized as among the best values in health professions education. “Best value” includes parameters of cost, quality, and accessibility.

    • The College of Medicine will be recognized as a top 75 medical school in research, education, and primary care.
    • The School of Public Health will be recognized as a top 20 program.
    • The College of Pharmacy will be recognized as a top 35 program.
    • The College of Dentistry will continue to be recognized and rise within the premier ranks of Dental Colleges, and will double its research expenditures.
    • The College of Nursing will be recognized as a National Center of Excellence for nursing education by the National League for Nursing.

TAMHSC will have defined, solidified, and expanded the scope and quality of regional clinical partnerships, achieving a required critical mass at each regional center to assure excellence across the mission space. We will attract outstanding applicants from across the nation as visibility expands. There will be a 25% increase enrollment in the Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy, and a 50% increase in the enrollment in the College of Nursing and School of Public Health, with equal or improved quality compared to today’s applicants and graduates.

  • We will be the primary trusted source of health information for the Texas public, the Texas Legislature, and Texas State Leadership.

TAMHSC will have implemented research, education, translational science, and clinical programs that provide us with a national identity and leading expertise. These programs will leverage the strengths of the TAMHSC, the A&M System, our regional partners, and the resources of Texas. Among the programs are the following:

    • Institute for Applied Biotherapeutics Science: TAMHSC will develop a national scale, multidisciplinary Institute to focus on accelerating the delivery of complex molecules including new biotherapeutics and vaccines by utilizing the best practices of academia and industry to translate basic scientific discoveries into approved therapeutics with novel drug delivery systems available to the general population.
    • Public Health Preparedness and Response: TAMHSC will be recognized as an international leader in public health preparedness and response by successfully implementing the Center for Innovation in Advanced Development and Manufacturing, and implementing novel emergency response and management programs that leverage the core capabilities of the A&M System.
    • Regenerative Medicine and Cell Therapeutics: TAMHSC will be known as a national center of excellence by linking basic research programs with the unique translational capabilities of advanced development, Good Manufacturing Practice manufacturing, and clinical trials.
    • Distributed Health Care and Primary Care: Together with the College of Engineering and multiple Texas A&M agencies, TAMHSC will pioneer a new model for distributed, patient-centric, health care - leveraging advances in devices, materials, and information technology to improve patient and population health, while developing a more efficient sustainable model of primary care.
    • Quantum Medicine: TAMHSC will establish novel and internationally unique collaborations with the College of Science to explore, develop, and translate advances in physics into practical achievements for public health. Examples include novel imaging technologies and isotopes, quantum biology, quantum optics including diagnostics and detection, and novel treatment modalities.
    • One Health: TAMHSC will be the key component of the One Health PLUS Initiative in the area of human health. Furthermore, the TAMHSC will be recognized nationally as a leader in the field of environmental health by acquiring recognition from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) as a Center of Excellence in Environmental Health. In this leadership role, the HSC will utilize the Center for Translational Environmental Health Research (CTEHR) to synergize inter-collegiate environmental health related research across the A&M System.
  • The Institute for Biosciences and Technology (IBT) will double in size and funding, and provide TAMU a critical footprint within the most important health-related square mile on the planet – the Texas Medical Center (TMC).

The IBT will be TAMHSC’s portal for collaboration and synergy with the world class institutions in the TMC, and will become a nationally recognized institute through its own merits.

  • The Bryan Campus will become the vibrant epicenter for regional life sciences activities, with expanded infrastructure and capabilities for students, clinicians, researchers, commercial partners, and academic investigators through the development and expansion of facilities from both within TAMHSC and from throughout the Texas A&M System.

We will establish a small, strategically-focused, self-sustaining practice plan that supports targeted clinical activities essential for education and research.

  • Leveraging existing efforts such as the Center for Health Organization Transformation (CHOT), and relationships with TAMU components such as the Bush School, TAMHSC will implement an elite program to develop Health Care Leaders who will champion the future transformation of the American Health Care System.

These Leaders will be trained to the highest level of their professions, but also be trained and mentored in science and technology policy, national and state politics, economics, law, and ethics.

TAMHSC will have the financial flexibility to recruit and retain top scientists and clinicians, attract top national students including under-represented minorities, generously endow the M.D.-Ph.D. program, and provide seed funding to investigators with high-risk, high-reward ideas.

Decisions at all levels will be driven by an uncompromising dedication to quality education, research, translational science, patient care, and health advocacy – factors that do not contribute to, or will distract from these parameters, will not drive decisions.

What does Texas A&M Health Science Center look like in 10 years?
