David S. Carlson, Ph.D., is the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies at the Texas A&M Health Science Center. Dr. Carlson came to Baylor College of Dentistry in 1993 as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Biomedical Sciences. In 1994 he was appointed as Director of the Center for Craniofacial Research & Diagnosis and as the first Robert E. Gaylord Endowed Professor of Orthodontics. Dr. Carlson is now Associate Dean for Research and Advanced Education at Baylor College of Dentistry. He was awarded the Regents Professor Service Award by the Texas A&M University System in 2002.
Dr. Carlson received his doctoral degree in from the University of Massachusetts in 1974. Following completion of postdoctoral training in anatomy and craniofacial anomalies at The University of Michigan in 1978, Dr. Carlson joined the faculty of the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology and Center for Human Growth and Development of The University of Michigan Medical School, where he advanced through to the rank of professor in 1988. He also became Professor and Director of Research in Department of Orthodontics of The University of Michigan School of Dentistry in 1983.
Dr. Carlson is a member of numerous scientific societies and organizations, including the International Association for Dental Research, American Association of Anatomists, the Friends of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (Executive Committee). Dr. Carlson was also elected as an Honorary Member of the American Association of Orthodontists. His research interests on development and growth of the craniofacial complex, craniofacial anomalies, and dentofacial orthopedic treatment have resulted in over 100 research articles, chapters, and reviews; over 90 abstracts; and 11 edited books.
